I enjoy getting to know you, and you seem just as curious about me. So here's a bit about my life.
I've always loved to read, and I want you to have the same fun. That's why I write mystery and adventure stories and put something exciting at the end of every chapter. Among these books are my best-selling Adventures of the Northwoods novels, which are set in the early 1900's in Minneapolis, Duluth, northwest Wisconsin, and upper Michigan. My 1857 Riverboat Adventures offer page-turning cliffhangers, the mysteries of the Underground Railroad, and a fresh perspective on the freedoms sought in the Declaration of Independence.
And now, what's the newest fiction series? Viking Quest! To research those novels I did a great deal of reading and asking questions. Then I traveled to the places I wanted to write about. What are some of the sites I visited? In the Republic of Ireland I researched at important museums in Dublin, spent days walking, listening, and learning at Glendalough, and climbed Bree's mountain. In Northern Ireland I discovered the Giant's Causeway and the six-sided stones, as Devin did. In Norway I visited the Viking Ship Museum in Oslo, the Maritime Museum in Bergen, and figured out how Bree could hide on the nearby mountain.
In the Aurland Fjord I met a 91-year-old gentleman named Anders Ohnstad. An historian, author, linguist, and former teacher, Anders talked with me for three days. At the end of that time I suddenly knew who my Norwegian father could be. When I knew that, I understood how I could write the Viking series as a family story. With the help of Anders my Norwegian family became real people.
Although targeted for boys and girls, my novels are read by people of all ages. If you write and say, "I'm 16, or 24, or 56, and I'm still reading your books," that's okay!
In all that I do, I support family values and often write about self-respect, caring for others, and standing up to peer pressure. I work hard to make my novels historically accurate because I want you to know and understand the time about which I write. Isn't it fun to discover that kids living in other times and places often faced the kinds of things that you know now?
Through God's help, my work has been published in English-speaking countries throughout the world and translated into 12 languages. I feel grateful for readers who have written from more than 40 countries to say, "I love your books. I can't put them down."
I'm a former public school teacher and an instructor for Writer's Digest School. I've also taught writing and inspirational topics at every grade and age level and have spoken to groups in mainland U.S., Hawaii, and Canada.
My terrific husband, Roy Johnson, was an elementary teacher in Minneapolis and then a counselor for children at risk in northwest Wisconsin. Roy was widowed at 27 and his daughter, Gail, was 4 1/2 when we married. In time, Jeff and Kevin joined our family. By now all of them are grown up and married, and we have awesome grandkids!
Roy and I enjoy living in Minnesota and working together on my novels. Sometimes we use our small RV--our Treehouse--to camp with family and friends. Other times we research a novel or I teach somewhere. I also like to cycle, take pictures, snowshoe, and hike. Maybe we'll see you somewhere along those trails!
